Vidisha: In a heart warming and unusual display of affection for a pet, a farmer in Madhya Pradesh performed the last rites of his beloved goat with full Hindu traditions, treating her no differently than a human family member. The incident, which highlights an extraordinary bond between a human and an animal, took place in the Sironj area of Vidisha district.

Naval Singh Malviya, a resident of the Bhawani Nagar neighbourhood, was left heartbroken when his pet goat passed away on August 3. The goat, affectionately named ‘Katori’ and also known as ‘Chameli,’ had been an integral part of Malviya’s household for nearly 20 years.

Recalling the special bond, Naval Singh shared that Katori was raised just like a daughter. She did not live in a shed but slept on a bed inside the house and spent all her time with the family members. “When Katori passed away, it felt as if a very special member of our own family had left us,” an emotional Naval Singh expressed.

Instead of a regular burial, the grieving farmer decided to bid farewell to Katori with full respect and human dignity. After obtaining official permission from the local administration, he cremated the goat. Following the traditional customs, Naval Singh travelled to the holy river Ganga to immerse her ashes with proper religious rituals.

The mourning did not stop there. To mark the completion of the mourning period, a grand ‘Tehravin’ feast was organised on August 15. The family went as far as printing and distributing formal condolence cards to invite relatives, friends, and neighbours. Around 500 people attended the community feast to pay their respects and offer condolences to the grieving family.

In a time when even elderly human beings sometimes face neglect from their own families, Naval Singh’s deep compassion for a speechless animal has deeply touched the local community. Relatives and neighbours who attended the feast widely praised the farmer for his sensitive and loving gesture towards his loyal companion.
