New Delhi: In a welcome move for millions of train passengers across India, the Ministry of Railways has announced a reduction in the price of its signature packaged drinking water brand, Rail Neer.
The price cut follows the recent reduction in Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates and is aimed at passing on the benefit directly to consumers.
According to a circular issued by the Railway Board on September 20, the maximum retail price (MRP) of Rail Neer has been revised from ₹15 to ₹14 for a one-litre bottle and from ₹10 to ₹9 for a 500 ml bottle. The new rates will be applicable across all railway stations and onboard trains starting September 22.
Other Brands Also Included
The revised pricing will not be limited to Rail Neer alone. Packaged drinking water bottles of other brands shortlisted by IRCTC and approved for sale on railway premises and trains will also see similar price reductions. This ensures uniformity and fairness in pricing across the board, benefiting passengers regardless of their brand preference.
Passenger-Friendly Initiative
Rail Neer, launched by IRCTC in 2003, has become a staple for train travellers seeking safe and affordable drinking water. The brand was initially introduced to serve premium trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi and has since expanded its reach across the Indian Railways network.
The latest price cut is part of Indian Railways’ broader initiative to enhance passenger amenities and affordability. With crores of passengers travelling every month, even a ₹1 reduction per bottle translates into significant collective savings.
Implementation And Oversight
The Railway Board has directed all general managers and the CMD of IRCTC to ensure strict implementation of the revised pricing. Officials have been instructed to update rate lists and ensure compliance across vendors and catering units.
This move is expected to be particularly beneficial during peak travel seasons, when demand for bottled water surges. It also reflects the government’s commitment to making essential services more accessible and cost-effective for the common man.
