Chandigarh: In a significant development ahead of the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal has dropped strong hints about a potential political realignment. On Friday, the SAD chief indicated that his party might be open to rejoining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to contest the state polls.

Speaking to the media shortly after a formal meeting with the Governor of Punjab, Badal clearly outlined his party’s primary political adversaries. He stated that the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress remain the main rivals for the SAD in the state. While he stopped short of explicitly naming the BJP, Badal notably mentioned that an alliance could be explored with a “like-minded party.”

This subtle yet substantial political messaging from the SAD leadership comes closely on the heels of a confident assertion made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Just a day prior, Shah had publicly stated that the NDA would form the next government in Punjab. The consecutive statements from the top brass of both former alliance partners have triggered widespread speculation across political circles regarding a renewed pre-poll pact.

Historically, the SAD and the BJP have shared a long-standing political partnership in Punjab, having successfully contested multiple elections together before parting ways in recent years. If this potential reconciliation materializes, it is expected to alter the electoral dynamics and vote arithmetic of the border state significantly.

As of now, neither the Shiromani Akali Dal nor the Bharatiya Janata Party has issued a formal, official confirmation regarding the reinstatement of their political alliance. However, the rapidly developing political situation has already drawn sharp reactions from political opponents. The Aam Aadmi Party has actively begun targeting the speculated coalition, preparing its ground for a multi-cornered contest. As the election season gradually heats up, political observers are keenly watching the evolving electoral strategies in the state.
