Dhaka/ New Delhi: Bangladesh faces the looming threat of a power supply disruption from Adani Power, as the Indian conglomerate has issued a fresh ultimatum over unpaid dues exceeding ₹1,000 crore (approximately $112.7 million).

In a letter dated January 29 to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB), Adani Power’s Vice President Avinash Anurag demanded immediate settlement of arrears, warning that failure to pay could halt electricity generation, maintenance, and supply from its 1,600 MW Godda coal-fired plant in Jharkhand.

The outstanding amount comprises $53.2 million up to June last year and $59.6 million for services till October. Despite repeated reminders, PDB has not cleared the dues, prompting Adani to highlight mounting financial pressure that risks breaching operational commitments.

This latest escalation revives a recurring dispute. In late 2025, Adani had threatened to suspend supply from November 11 over similar arrears, only for Bangladesh to partially pay and avert a cutoff. Payments have remained inconsistent since December, even as Adani continues boosting exports to help Bangladesh bridge its power gap amid declining natural gas availability and rising demand.

The warning comes at a crucial moment, as Bangladesh prepares for parliamentary elections and a referendum on February 12. The interim Yunus government, set to transition post-polls, now grapples with economic stability concerns that could intensify political tensions.

Adani’s Godda plant, operational since early 2023 under a 25-year PPA, supplies a significant portion of Bangladesh’s imported electricity — contributing around 15-16% to its power mix recently. While the deal has faced scrutiny over pricing and terms, with past reviews flagging overpricing, the immediate focus remains on clearing dues to ensure uninterrupted supply.

The communication did not detail an official response from PDB or the Yunus administration, which left the resolution uncertain amid pre-election uncertainties.
