Tel Aviv: The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued warrants for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the current conflict between Israel and Hamas. Furthermore the ICC has initiated an inquiry into the allegations, against Netanyahu.
Responses, from Israel and Hamas
Israel and Hamas have both denied the accusations. Raised concerns, about the courts authority. Israel dismissed the warrants as lacking merit. Hamas labeled the claims as politically driven. Interestingly though Hamas seemed pleased with the decision to issue an arrest warrant, for Netanyahu.
Israels military has contested the ICCs decision regarding Mohammed Deif by asserting that he was killed in a Gaza airstrike back, in July.
The Dutch government has agreed to collaborate
The Netherlands appears prepared to respond to the ICCs warrants. Might proceed with actions, for the arrest of Netanyahu. The information indicates that the Dutch government has often voiced concerns about Israels conduct during the Gaza conflict and backs the ICCs ruling. If this comes to pass it could pose a challenge, to Netanyahus standing in affairs.
Discoveries
The ICCs inquiry asserts that Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant directed assaults, on civilians and obstructed global humanitarian assistance to Gaza while creating situations that resulted in widespread hunger among the population. The court further claims that Netanyahu sanctioned demolitions, in Gaza disguised as actions.
The judges of the ICC have stated that these elements are considered war crimes and crimes, against humanity and have therefore decided to issue arrest warrants.
Carrying out the enforcement of arrest warrants
The International Criminal Court (ICC) will begin sharing the warrants with its member countries nevertheless it is important to note that member nations are not required to adhere to these warrants since they are viewed as recommendations, than mandatory directives by the ICC. Governments maintain authority, over their international policy determinations which could hinder the execution of these warrants.
This scenario is similar, to the ICCs indictment of Russian President Vladimir Putin for suspected genocide, in Ukraine; however; Putin has managed to visit nations without repercussions which highlights the ICCs enforcement limitations.
