Ottawa: CANADIAN Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly planning to step down as the leader of the Liberal Party, multiple sources told The Globe and Mail. This decision is made as more signs point to the fact that Trudeau, aged 53, is fading within the polls as the opposition Conservative Party led by Pierre Poilievre seriously threatens to unseat him and the Liberals if elections were held today.
The resignation is expected to happen prior to a national caucus meeting planned for Wednesday. An inside source told the publication that Trudeau believes it is important for him to announce something before this meeting to avoid the impression that he is kicked out by his own MPs. Therefore, their unknown remains uncertain as to who would follow him up and if he has a chance to travel as Prime Minister up to the time when the new leader will be elected.
Trudeau has been on rather shaky political ground, specifically after commenting on the farm protests in India, a comment that has called for his own party members to call for his resignation. Investors are opting for the US dollar because of this pressure, especially after the departure of Canada’s finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, on December 16 due to policy disagreements with Trudeau.
The local media have suggested that Trudeau’s aides have been looking into how he may remain a PM even if he is listed on LinkedIn as a Liberal chief. The party would need to find an acting leader through the parliamentary order paper or another vote of the members of the party in the national caucus.
With political changes in Canada, everyone now looks at Trudeau and seeks to know the consequences of the change to the Liberal Party, especially on its next direction.
