PM Modi’s Push For Uniform Civil Code: A Step Towards National Unity

NewDelhi: Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Union Law Minister, revealed on Tuesday that the talks on the application of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) were underway. Meghwal underscored the fact that UCC had been in force in Goa and a law had been passed in Uttarakhand. He also reiterated that the UCC is a core promise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the manifesto, solely reflecting the party’s commitment to its implementation.

Megwhal illustrated that the UCC is a law in Goa, and Uttarakhand is a new place that has it. He pointed out that the Indian Law Commission is the one dealing with it while several states are getting involved with the new law. The earlier commission, which was created this year, added the Uniform Civil Code to its assigned tasks.

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed the need for a secular civil code in the Parliament during the debate that organised the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution. He iterated that the concept of a Uniform Civil Code that was widely discussed by the Constituent Assembly should now be realised in order to keep national unity and modernity.

PM Modi referred to the support of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar for the abolishment of personal laws based on religion. He also mentioned K.M. Munshi, a key figure in the Constituent Assembly, who was of the opinion that a Uniform Civil Code was a prerequisite for the country’s unity and advancement. The Supreme Court on multiple occasions has also drawn attention to the necessity of a Uniform Civil Code being implemented and has conveyed to the governments to take steps to this effect.

Modi stressed that it is the shared duty of all to bring the vision of the Constitution’s framers to reality. He made it clear that laws that discriminate on religious grounds are out of place in the contemporary world. The Prime Minister sought the form of a secular civil code that integrates a collective mindset and is devoid of the input of different religions.

In keeping with this vision, the BJP offered in its election manifesto for the 2024 Lok Sabha the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, positing that without this, gender equality cannot be achieved. The UCC is mentioned in the preamble of Article 44 in the Indian Constitution among other directives of the state, and it thus urges the government to pursue its implementation.
