PM Modi Encourages Indian Students To Apply For QUAD Fellowship; What Is It & Who Can Apply?

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday asked Indian students to apply for QUAD Fellowship programme, which inaugurated at the  QUAD Summit in Japan.

The Fellowship programme is among the many initiatives launched at the summit. The Fellowship aims at bringing the best minds in STEM of the four QUAD countries – India, USA, Australia and Japan for a collaborative and innovative development.

Modi encouraged the students to make the most of this initiative. Calling it an excellent platform for brilliant minds to interact, Modi hoped that Indian students from STEM or Science, technology, Engineering and Mathematics would apply for the programme.

Meanwhile, UGC has invited applications for Quad fellowship in which 25 STEM students each from the QUAD countries will innovate and research while pursuing their graduate degrees in the United States.

The Quad Fellowship, a new graduate-level fellowship designed to build ties among the next generation of scientists and technologists, is recruiting its first cohort this year.

This programme will sponsor 100 exceptional American, Japanese, Australian, and Indian master’s and doctoral students in STEM to study in the United States.

There will be no financial liability on the part of UGC for this fellowship programme, stated a release by the Ministry of Education.

What is Quad Fellowship Programme

The aim is to create a network of experts ‘committed to advancing innovation and collaboration across sectors’. Those selected will get a chance to pursue Masters and Doctoral degree in STEM courses from the top universities in the USA. It is essentially a scholarship programme that would fund 100 students every year, 25 students from each of the four countries would get this scholarship.

As per preliminary information, each fellow would get $50,000 onetime financial award to cover the tuition and research fees and expenses. Apart from this, the fellows would also be eligible up to $25,000 funding to cover other costs.

Who can apply?

Students who have completed or would complete their graduation in STEM by August 2023 are eligible to apply. Since the fellowship aims at bringing the best minds from the world together, an excellent academic record would be required. Students who have completed their Masters are also eligible to apply for Research-based programmes.
