Magura: The ancestral residence of former Bangladesh national cricket team captain and Awami League politician Shakib Al Hasan was targeted in a brazen petrol bomb attack on Wednesday night. The violent episode unfolded in Magura town just hours after the prominent cricketer virtually attended a press conference addressed by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi.

A group of unidentified miscreants stormed the property located in the Keshabmor area at approximately 8:45 PM local time. Local authorities reported that the unruly mob initially hurled brick pieces at the house, severely damaging the exterior walls and shattering glass windows. The situation escalated quickly when the attackers threw a petrol bomb into the premises in a clear attempt to set the entire house on fire under the cover of darkness.

The Officer in Charge of the Magura Sadar Police Station confirmed the attack to the media. The official stated that the identities of the perpetrators remained unknown immediately following the incident. To prevent any subsequent violence, a heavy contingent of police personnel has been deployed around the prominent sports personality home to restore peace and thoroughly secure the area.

This targeted vandalism is being widely viewed as a direct political retaliation. Earlier that same day, Shakib participated in a virtual media interaction hosted by the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia. The event featured Sheikh Hasina addressing the international press for the first time since her dramatic exit from power. Shakib previously served as a Member of Parliament representing the Magura constituency under her leadership.

In response to the arson attack, the Awami League issued strong statements condemning the violence. Party representatives alleged that rival political factions, specifically naming the BNP and Islamist Jamaat, had been issuing public threats to media outlets and individuals associated with the high profile presser.

The attack on one of the most celebrated sporting icons of Bangladesh underscores the intensely volatile political climate currently gripping the nation. As law enforcement agencies begin their investigation, the incident has sparked widespread concerns over the safety of political figures and their properties amidst the ongoing unrest.
