Melbourne: Rishabh Pant, the Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, has made his first remarks on the criticisms he has been facing concerning his aggressive batting style after India’s loss in the Melbourne Test. At a post-match press conference after day one of the Sydney Test, Pant spoke in favour of his natural playing style while he also accepted the need for his situational awareness. “Pant defends Pant’s natural playing style and situational awareness.”
The squabble was unthinking when Pant was caught out by part-time bowler Travis Head trying for a risky six, which, in turn, in the batting order of his team, blocked his normal path to making 340 runs. The incident led to Gambhir feeling strongly about it and venting his displeasure in the locker room about the whole batting approach of the team.
“There are various ways to approach the game.” Pant mentioned at the press conference. “While I prefer playing aggressively, it is crucial to consider the team situations. The key is to find the right balance between the two approaches.”
The main reason for India’s collapse in the Melbourne Test was the series of poor shot selections made by the Indian batsmen. The dismissal of Rohit Sharma by Pat Cummins, Virat Kohli playing an off-side shot too early, and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s misguided pull shot against a set field were the major reasons for India’s downfall.
Simultaneously, India’s batting downturn was evident in the ongoing Sydney Test as they lost their first innings at 185 runs without a single batsman scoring a half-century. Australia, in reply, ended the day at 9/1, with Bumrah taking a single wicket but trailing by 176 runs.
Matters of batting strategies and accountability are what the Indian team struggles with, even after they lost this Test match.
