Islamabad: Pakistan stirred controversy at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) by raising the Kashmir issue, and levelling baseless allegations against India during a debate on global peace.
Pakistan’s envoy, Munir Akram, accused India of human rights violations and suppressing Kashmiri self-determination, claims India swiftly dismissed as “false and malicious”.
The remarks, made on Tuesday, sparked a diplomatic firestorm, with India accusing Pakistan of misusing the UN platform to push a divisive agenda.
India’s Permanent Representative, Parvathaneni Harish, delivered a stinging rebuttal, asserting that Jammu and Kashmir is an inalienable part of India. He highlighted Pakistan’s history of sponsoring cross-border terrorism, including attacks on Indian soil, and urged the UNSC to address Islamabad’s role in destabilising the region.
Harish reiterated India’s commitment to peace and development in Kashmir, citing infrastructure projects and democratic elections as proof of progress.
The exchange comes amid strained India-Pakistan ties, with New Delhi consistently rejecting Islamabad’s attempts to internationalise the Kashmir issue.
Analysts see Pakistan’s move as an effort to deflect scrutiny from its domestic challenges, including economic woes and political unrest.
The UNSC debate, focused on multilateral cooperation, saw no support for Pakistan’s claims, with most members urging dialogue over confrontation.
India’s firm stance underscores its growing global influence, as it prepares for a non-permanent UNSC seat in 2028. For now, the Kashmir rhetoric remains a flashpoint, with India calling for global action against terrorism to ensure lasting peace.
