Pakistan Cricket Needs A Gambhir Touch, Says Former Cricketer Danish Kaneria

Lahore: Following Pakistan’s crushing 2-0 defeat in the Test series against Bangladesh on hometurf, former cricketer Danish Kaneria has called for a major shake-up in the team’s coaching approach. Pakistan, led by Shan Masood, faced sharp criticism from former players, who lambasted both their batting and bowling performances.

Now, Danish Kaneria, a former spinner, has stepped in with his own assessment of the situation, suggesting a radical change in the team’s coaching style to address its poor performance.

Kaneria believes Pakistan needs a coach with a tough, no-nonsense approach—someone like India’s Gautam Gambhir. “The Indian cricket team is succeeding because of a coach like Gautam Gambhir,” Kaneria stated. He highlighted how teams like India are consistently performing well in international cricket, and credits this to the strong, assertive coaching styles seen in the Indian camp.

He mentioned that earlier, a coach like Rahul Dravid played a vital role in shaping the Indian team’s success, and now, Gambhir is building upon that foundation with his straightforward and strong approach.

Elaborating on his viewpoint, Kaneria said, “Gambhir’s intent and determination are visible on his face. He doesn’t waver from his strategies, and that’s how a coach should be—firm, decisive, and confident.” According to Kaneria, such leadership qualities are crucial for the Pakistan cricket team in its current predicament.

Kaneria emphasised that Pakistan’s cricket team has reached a low point where they desperately need a coach who is not afraid to take tough decisions and hold the team accountable. “You need a coach who stands by his decisions and displays strength, not someone who hides behind a facade,” he added.

This call for a coaching overhaul comes after Pakistan’s dismal performance against Bangladesh, which led to widespread criticism from former players and pundits alike. Many have questioned the team’s commitment and preparation, calling for changes at various levels within the squad.

With the team’s morale reportedly low after the recent defeat, Kaneria’s comments have added fuel to the ongoing debate about Pakistan’s cricket management. Whether his suggestion for a more “Gambhir-like” coaching style will be considered remains to be seen.

The Pakistan cricket team, once a dominant force in world cricket, now finds itself at a crossroads. With calls for change growing louder, the team must make some tough decisions to reclaim its status on the international stage. Kaneria’s appeal for a tougher, more assertive coach could be the first step towards rebuilding Pakistan cricket’s reputation and regaining its competitive edge.
