Bhubaneswar/Cuttack: In more woes for consumers, the price of onions touched Rs 100 per kg at some markets in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack on Sunday.
Last week, onions in the state were selling for Rs 75-90 as against Rs 20 per kg four months ago.
The galloping price of this essential commodity has seen a decrease in demand recently, which has adversely affected sellers too. The traders complained that they were incurring losses because unsold stocks of onions were rotting.
According to traders in Cuttack, the stock of red onions, which are imported to Odisha from Nasik, Maharashtra, has gone down due to low harvest and was selling at Rs 7,000 per quintal at present. This has led to the unusual hike in the price of onions, they added.
They, however, held out hope that the price of onions will come down once they are harvested in Kurnool and Gudum districts of Andhra Pradesh and Nasik.
