Bengaluru: In a cinematic rags-to-riches tale, the founder of Bengaluru’s iconic Rameshwaram Cafe recently experienced a remarkable full-circle moment. Raghavendra, who once stood for hours outside Shah Rukh Khan’s Mumbai residence, Mannat, hoping for an acting break, recently served his signature dosas to the Bollywood superstar at Anant Ambani’s grand wedding celebrations.
Years before establishing a culinary empire, Raghavendra had abandoned his engineering studies to pursue an acting career in Mumbai. Struggling to find work and lacking funds for basic survival, his journey took him to New Delhi to audition for the prestigious National School of Drama (NSD), the alma mater of acclaimed actors like Irrfan Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Following a rejection from the institute, he faced severe financial hardship, which forced him to sleep on park benches and rely on free temple meals for sustenance.
To make ends meet, Raghavendra began working in local restaurants, taking on menial tasks such as washing dishes, chopping vegetables, and occasionally managing the counter. This difficult phase inadvertently became a masterclass in the ground-level operations of the food business. Accepting that acting was not his true calling, he returned to Bengaluru, completed his engineering degree in 2011, and launched a small idli-dosa venture the following year, which eventually evolved into the popular chain IDC Kitchen.
However, as the business expanded and new partners came on board, operational differences emerged. Unwilling to compromise on food quality, Raghavendra made the difficult decision to walk away from the enterprise he had built.
The turning point came when he crossed paths with Divya, a professional with strong finance and business acumen. Combining her corporate expertise with his deep knowledge of food operations, the duo launched The Rameshwaram Cafe in 2021. Their business model was built on a singular, unwavering focus: strict quality control, featuring fresh batter, daily-made chutneys, and the exclusive use of pure ghee. Within just a few years, the modest eatery rapidly expanded its footprint from Bengaluru to major metropolitan markets like Hyderabad and Mumbai.
The ultimate validation of Raghavendra’s journey arrived at the Ambani wedding festivities. Handpicked to set up a culinary counter for the VIP guests, he had the opportunity to serve his food directly to Shah Rukh Khan. When Raghavendra recounted his days of waiting outside the actor’s home, Khan praised his culinary craftsmanship, stating, “You make magical dosas. We are really proud of you.”
