While Apple is selling millions (if not billions) of the iPhone 16 series in India, collectors are spending lakhs on rare vintage iPhone models, including the 2007 iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 4.
The original iPhone, released in 2007, fetches astronomically high prices. Looking at 2024, a sealed 8GB iPhone 2G was auctioned off at ₹1.5 crore. In India, even opened units in decent shape sell for ₹50,000–₹2 lakh. The rarity and high price of the device stem from the fact that it is Apple’s first experimental smartphone. 2008 — The iPhone 3G launched with the App Store and a curved shape.
The iPhone 4 revolutionised design in 2010 with its stunning all-glass body and the introduction of its first Retina display. Mint condition or limited-edition pieces can cost ₹15,000 to ₹75,000. The iPhone 5 is emotionally charged because it was the last iPhone guided by Steve Jobs and came out in 2012. These units sell for between ₹15,000 and ₹35,000 among collectors. The first-generation iPhone SE from 2016 — combining the rugged design of the iPhone 5S with modern, powerful internals — is attracting a cult following. Boulding warns that sealed units may be more expensive next time around.
A collector based out of Mumbai, who also runs an online vintage tech store, said, “Sealed iPhones are like time capsules. “ Their value skyrockets at auctions.” JTT222 – Experts also advise against opening sealed units, as collectors and auction houses will pay a hefty premium for pristine seals.
India, which is experiencing an absolute boom in the vintage iPhone market as Apple fans choose to upgrade their devices to relatively newer models, is allowing these users to earn cash from their old phones.
