Odisha Chief Minister Orders Inquiry Into Alleged Police Assault On Army Officer And Fiancée

Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident that has sparked widespread outrage, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced a judicial inquiry into the alleged sexual and physical assault of an Army officer and his fiancée at the Bharatpur police station. The couple had gone to the station on September 14 to file a complaint against a group of miscreants who had chased them while they were returning home.

The Chief Minister’s Office shared the announcement via X (formerly Twitter), revealing that the inquiry will be led by Judge Justice Chittaranjan Das, with a directive for the report to be submitted within 60 days. Additionally, the court has been asked to expedite the criminal investigation under its direct supervision.

Emphasising the importance of the rule of law, the Chief Minister stated that the state government is deeply committed to the dignity, safety, and rights of women. He discussed the situation with key officials, including Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo, Revenue Minister Parvati Parida, Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, and senior officials before making the decision to order the inquiry.

In the wake of the incident, several police officials have been suspended, and a case has been registered against them for their alleged assault on the couple. The individuals accused of misbehaving with the couple have also been arrested and presented in court.

The distressing events unfolded when the couple, out for a walk, were pursued by a group of unidentified assailants. In a bid to ensure their safety, they sought refuge at the nearest police station. However, their hopes for protection turned to horror when, on the afternoon of September 15, they claimed to have been brutally assaulted by police officers instead of receiving help.

This alarming case has raised serious questions about police conduct and the protection of citizens, particularly in matters concerning the safety of women. As the inquiry unfolds, many await answers and accountability from those in power.
