No Plan To Extend Corona Lockdown: Govt

New Delhi: The Centre on Monday said that there was no plan to extend the 21-day lockdown which came into force on March 24 midnight.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry tweeted that Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba has denied media reports claiming that the government will extend the lockdown.

“There are rumours & media reports, claiming that the Government will extend the #Lockdown21 when it expires. The Cabinet Secretary has denied these reports, and stated that they are baseless,” it said.

The government clarification came a day after speculations had emerged in both mainstream and social media on Sunday that the lockdown would be extended in view of the increase in COVID-19 positive cases over the last few days.

Following the lockdown, which is aimed at checking the spread of the coronavirus, there has been a massive exodus of migrant workers from big cities to their villages after being rendered jobless.

India has been trying hard to flatten the coronavirus curve, imposing curbs on travel, enforcing social distancing, setting up facilities for treatment of coronavirus patients and roping in private hospitals and agencies to ramp up testing.
