NHRC Demands Answers On Hidden Camera Incidents In Andhra Pradesh And Karnataka

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of two shocking incidents involving hidden cameras found in a girls’ hostel and a restaurant in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, respectively. The NHRC has expressed serious concern over the right to safety and dignity of women, highlighting the urgent need for answers from state authorities.

In Andhra Pradesh, the issue erupted after a hidden camera was discovered in the toilet of the girls’ hostel at Gudalavaleru College of Engineering in Krishna district. The students, who uncovered the camera, staged a fierce protest, demanding justice and swift action. It has emerged that more than 300 pictures and videos were allegedly captured from the concealed device. The situation escalated further when reports suggested that some students from the boys’ hostel had purchased these videos, prompting police to question a suspect. A final-year student has already been detained in connection with the case.

A similar incident has been reported in Karnataka, where a hidden camera was found in the toilet of a popular restaurant in Bengaluru. These two cases have raised significant concerns about the violation of women’s rights and privacy, prompting the NHRC to act.

The Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police of both Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. It has requested detailed reports on both incidents within two weeks, emphasising the need to protect women’s safety and dignity. The NHRC has demanded information on the status of the FIRs registered by the police, as well as details of the steps being taken to ensure such violations do not occur again.

The NHRC has stated that if the contents of the media reports are accurate, they reflect a grave failure by the authorities to provide a safe environment for women. The Commission’s intervention underscores the need for accountability and swift action to prevent any recurrence of such breaches of privacy and trust.

Both state governments now face a two-week deadline to submit their reports, detailing the measures they have taken or plan to take to safeguard women’s rights and safety. The nation watches closely as the authorities respond to these disturbing revelations.
