Bengaluru: New Zealand triumphed on Sunday by winning the Bengaluru Test by 8 wickets against India, making the Kiwis win their first Test match in India in 36 years. Kiwis last won a game in India in 1988 at Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. However, with this victory New Zealand also secured a 1-0 lead in the three match series.
In pursuit of a target of 107 that India set, New Zealand lost only two wickets before comfortably won the match, with sensational innings from Will Young and Rachin Ravindra. This victory is more special as this is the first time New Zealand has come out victoriously over the Indian team in a Test game in the 21st century.
India with only two points per over target set a competitive 107 run chase against New Zealand after being bowled out in the second innings. At this stage, the Kiwis were looking favourites to win the match with 10 wickets standing intact and a full day ahead from them. This came as a surprise, after losing only two wickets, they sailed to a ¨victory.
Rachin Ravindra and Will Young played decisive roles in taking New Zealand to their first-ever Test triumph in India since 1988. Ravindra backed up his century in the first innings and seeing New Zealand through for a formidable target.
The win also means New Zealand have recorded a 200-plus first innings lead in 45 Test cricket matches. The team has gained such lead in 59 matches and were never defeated at all because out of the total matches, they emerged winners in 45 matches and tied in 14 matches.
India-New Zealand Bengaluru Test – Brief Review
The Bengaluru Test was a rollercoaster. India being asked to bat first were bundled out for 46, thus making New Zealand sure of a massive heist. In reply, the Kiwis posted a mammoth first innings total of 402 after Ravindra registered his second Test hundred, the first against India and on a foreign soil.
India came back strongly in second innings and again there’s special mention for Sarfaraz Khan who scored a century and an outstanding innings by Rishav Pant 99. Still, India could not turn the tables over the Kiwi side as they managed a 356-run lead in the first innings and the target set of 107 was too small to be defended.
This victory takes the New Zealand side to a very important 1-0 lead in the three Test series and they would like to carry this on in the other games.
