New Delhi: The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has introduced a new policy prohibiting bilateral sporting events with Pakistan, while allowing Indian teams to participate in multilateral tournaments like the Asia Cup 2025, where a marquee India-Pakistan match is slated for September 14 in Dubai.

Key Provisions Of The Policy

No Bilateral Engagements: Indian teams will not travel to Pakistan for bilateral contests, nor will Pakistani teams be permitted to compete in India, aligning with India’s broader diplomatic stance.

Multilateral Participation Allowed: Indian athletes and teams can compete in international events involving Pakistan, such as the Asia Cup, without restrictions. Similarly, Pakistani players can participate in such events hosted by India.

Visa Simplification: To position India as a global sports hub, visa processes for foreign athletes and officials will be streamlined, with multi-entry visas offered for up to five years.

Context And Implications

The policy, effective immediately, comes against the backdrop of strained India-Pakistan relations, intensified by the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack. While public sentiment has fuelled calls to boycott the Asia Cup match, the ministry’s decision ensures compliance with international sports norms, safeguarding India’s bid to host events like the 2036 Olympics.

The Asia Cup, set to commence on September 9 in the UAE, will see India and Pakistan in Group A alongside UAE and Oman. The tournament, in T20 format, is a key preparatory event for the 2026 T20 World Cup, heightening its significance.

Public And Political Reactions

The policy has sparked mixed reactions. Some fans and political figures, citing security concerns, have urged a boycott, while others, including cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar, argue that players should not face criticism for participating in multilateral events, as they follow government directives.

With this policy, India strikes a balance between diplomatic firmness and sporting inclusivity, setting the stage for a high-octane cricketing showdown in Dubai.
