New Delhi: The issuance of new domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections has been temporarily suspended across India, driven by escalating geopolitical conflicts in West Asia and the ongoing standoff between the United States and Iran over the crucial Strait of Hormuz. Consequently, oil marketing companies (OMCs) have halted the rollout of new 14.2 kg domestic cylinder connections since March 2026, leaving prospective consumers facing extended waiting periods.
Addressing the widespread confusion, the Union Petroleum Ministry issued a statement on social media confirming the temporary freeze. The ministry explained that amidst global supply chain uncertainties, the government’s immediate priority is safeguarding energy security for existing households. By pausing new enrollments, distributors can focus entirely on providing timely, uninterrupted cylinder refills to current consumers, ensuring no localized shortages occur. The ministry assured the public that the suspension is not permanent and new connections will be authorized once the situation in West Asia normalizes and international LPG supplies stabilize.
To manage the current inventory efficiently, OMCs are implementing several backend optimizations. While new applications are on hold, agencies are actively processing the reactivation of dormant connections. Companies are aggressively pushing users to complete mandatory Know Your Customer (KYC) verifications to weed out ghost accounts and prevent fraudulent LPG purchases. Additionally, strict limitations have been imposed on commercial gas procurement to prevent the diversion of domestic cylinders.
The government has also introduced stringent regulations for urban households to optimize resource distribution. In regions already covered by Piped Natural Gas (PNG) networks, residents are now mandated to adopt the piped alternative. Furthermore, consumers currently utilizing both PNG and traditional LPG connections are required to surrender their LPG cylinders immediately. The administration has warned that failure to voluntarily surrender the redundant cylinder will lead to the automatic deactivation of the LPG connection.
