New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is preparing for his first official visit to the United States since assuming the role of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Scheduled for next week, the visit will focus on engaging with the Indian diaspora, students, business leaders, think tanks, and local political figures. Sam Pitroda, President of the Indian Overseas Congress, provided details of the planned visit.
Rahul Gandhi will commence his visit in Dallas, Texas, on September 8, where he is set to interact with students and faculty members at the University of Texas. He will also meet with members of the local Indian community and hold discussions with technical experts. His engagements in Dallas will culminate with a dinner meeting involving local leaders.
Following his stop in Dallas, Rahul Gandhi will head to Washington DC on September 9 and 10, where he will continue his outreach efforts with various groups and stakeholders. Notably, this visit comes amid the intensifying campaign for the upcoming US presidential election.
Sam Pitroda has expressed that the visit holds significant importance for the Indian community in the US. “The Indian diaspora, which includes our NRI brothers and sisters, technocrats, business leaders, students, media fraternity, and political leaders, are eager to welcome and interact with Shri Rahul Gandhi,” Pitroda stated.
This trip is seen as part of Rahul Gandhi’s ongoing efforts to build a connection with Indians living abroad. He previously visited the US in June last year, where he engaged with Indian students in San Francisco and addressed members of the Indian community in a press conference.
The visit comes at a crucial time, following Rahul Gandhi’s recent appointment as Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha — a position that had remained vacant from 2014 to 2024 due to a lack of sufficient opposition MPs. The Congress Party’s improved performance in recent elections has enabled Gandhi to take on this key parliamentary role.
For the Indian community in the US, this visit is a chance to communicate their concerns directly to a senior Indian politician. Gandhi’s interactions are expected to cover various issues affecting the diaspora, providing an opportunity for a direct exchange of views.
Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the US is expected to strengthen his ties with the global Indian community and reinforce his leadership role within the Congress Party. The visit is viewed not just from a political perspective, but also as a platform for fostering closer engagement between Indian communities abroad and the Congress leadership.
