New Delhi: Nepal witnessed a wave of youth-led protests on Sunday as thousands of Gen-Z demonstrators took to the streets of Kathmandu, demanding the immediate reversal of the government’s controversial ban on social media platforms.

The protest, which unfolded on September 8, was sparked by the recent decision to restrict access to platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok — an action the government claims is aimed at curbing misinformation and maintaining public order.

The demonstrators, largely comprising university students and young professionals, gathered in front of the Prime Minister’s residence, chanting slogans and holding placards that read “Let Us Speak” and “Digital Freedom is Our Right.” The protest was peaceful but powerful, with participants asserting that the ban infringes upon their freedom of expression and access to information.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, in his first public reaction to the unrest, remained defiant. “The government will not bow down to pressure,” he declared, adding that the restrictions were necessary to safeguard national interests. Oli’s statement came amid growing criticism from civil society groups, digital rights activists, and Opposition leaders who argue that the move is authoritarian and regressive.

The ban, which was implemented earlier this week, has drawn international attention, with several human rights organisations urging the Nepalese government to reconsider.

Meanwhile, the youth-led movement continues to gain momentum, with organisers planning further demonstrations and digital campaigns to amplify their message.

As the standoff intensifies, Nepal finds itself at a crossroads — between state control and the rising voice of a digitally-empowered generation unwilling to be silenced.
