NATO’s Possible Involvement In Ukraine Revealed: What Putin Almost Did in 2022?

London: NATO could have intervened in the Ukraine war, the sensational claim reveals that if Russia did not have nuclear weapons, the alliance would have intervened. The revelation, which was made by NATO military chief Rob Bauer to Newsweek, is the latest explosive revelation about the high stakes contest between Russia, NATO and Ukraine as the war between the two former allies continues.

Former UK PM Liz Truss used to be close with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Putin nearly used nuclear weapons against Ukraine, a biography claims as Putin’s threat of a second ‘special’ activation increases. The prospect of such an escalation sent shockwaves across Europe, with both the United States and the United Kingdom warning of the potential fall out. Both these countries were being pushed into emergency meetings as they feared whether radiation from a potential nuclear strike could spread into their territories. Radiation from the blast could have stretched as far as 2,700 km (1,600 miles), alarmingly.

In the months before late 2022, growing anxiety coursed through me – nuclear strike by Russia loomed. Discussions in the UK about the nuclear threat went to fever pitch, with emergency sessions in London to consider the fallout risks, said The Sun. It was feared that a nuclear attack could spread widespread radiation across much of Europe, with disastrous long term effects.

All of this uncertainty was exacerbated by the shifting political dynamics within the United States, where President Joe Biden started to authorise long range attacks by Ukraine on Russian territory. Concerned last year that US policy under former President Donald Trump was shifting, European leaders feared, the supply of the necessary arms would falter and worried they would have to continue supplying Ukraine, said the diplomat.

In return, Russia has increased its military alert, deploying nuclear capable hypersonic missiles in response to the rising support for Ukraine. The missiles are so fast that they were virtually impossible to intercept by any missile defence system. At the same time, Russia’s Northern Fleet has started military exercises in the English Channel near France, the UK and Germany with Zircon hypersonic missiles firing at targets simulating strikes.

And Russia has sent its navy in to do drills off the coast of the United States, with anti ship missiles being tested in the region. The threat of a catastrophic conflict looms high, as experts warn that tension will continue to grow due to the continued Russian presence in strategic locations of the region.

The 2022 world security balance is at its most fragile with Russia’s frightening revelations of nuclear brinkmanship and a possible NATO part in the Ukraine war. The world was, and remains, on edge as both sides backed each other into military aggression in one of the most aggressive periods in world diplomacy since the Cold War. In the backdrop of Russia’s assertion of its nuclear capabilities, along with a solid NATO backing to Ukraine, the international community can ill-afford to take our eyes off the real possibility of a wider war.
