New Delhi: On the eve of the country’s 78th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu delivered a heartfelt address to the nation, reflecting on India’s journey since independence and envisioning a future where the nation regains its full glory. The President emphasized India’s growing influence on the global stage and the country’s impressive economic strides in recent years.
In her address, President Murmu extended her best wishes to the nation, saying, “I wish you all a very happy Independence Day. It fills my heart with pride to see the tricolour flying high across the country, from the Red Fort to state capitals, as we prepare to celebrate our 78th Independence Day.”
Reflecting on India’s heritage and aspirations, President Murmu said, “We are part of a tradition that weaves together the dreams of our freedom fighters and the aspirations of future generations. We look forward to a time when our nation will regain its full glory.”
The President paid tribute to the contributions of tribal leader Birsa Munda, announcing that next year’s celebration of his 150th birth anniversary would offer a deeper recognition of his role in India’s national renaissance. She also highlighted the significance of August 14, which the country now observes as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. “This day is to remember the horrors of Partition, a time when millions were forced to migrate, and countless lives were lost,” Murmu said, expressing solidarity with the families torn apart during that tragedy.
Addressing the nation’s economic growth, President Murmu proudly noted that India has achieved an average annual growth rate of 8 percent between 2021 and 2024, making it one of the fastest-growing large economies in the world. “This growth has not only put more money in the hands of our citizens but has also significantly reduced the number of people living below the poverty line,” she added.
The President also highlighted India’s emergence as the fifth-largest economy globally, with the potential to soon rank among the top three. She attributed this success to the “tireless hard work of our farmers and workers, the far-reaching thinking of our policymakers and entrepreneurs, and the visionary leadership of the country.”
President Murmu praised India’s farmers for their critical role in ensuring the nation’s self-reliance in the agricultural sector, stating, “Our farmers have exceeded expectations in agricultural production, making an invaluable contribution to feeding our population.”
On the international front, Murmu spoke about India’s strengthened role in the Global South, particularly following its presidency of the G20. “India is now a leading voice in the Global South, and we aim to use this position to expand global peace and prosperity,” she said.
The President also touched on key government initiatives, including the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, which she said is designed to ensure the real empowerment of women. She lauded the government’s efforts to provide employment opportunities to the youth, noting that 4.10 crore young people will benefit from the Prime Minister’s employment and skill development schemes over the next five years. She also mentioned a new initiative that will enable one crore youth to gain internships in leading companies within the same period.
In discussing recent changes to India’s legal system, President Murmu noted the replacement of the Indian Penal Code with the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which she described as a move to “eliminate another vestige of the colonial era” and provide justice for crime victims rather than merely punishing offenders. She viewed this change as a tribute to India’s freedom fighters.
The President concluded her address by praising the performance of Indian athletes at the recent Paris Olympic Games, acknowledging the government’s efforts to develop sports infrastructure. “The dedication and hard work of our players have inspired the youth, and our country’s progress in sports over the last decade is commendable,” she said.
