Mumbai: Persistent heavy rainfall has once again slowed down the pace of life in India’s financial capital. Following continuous downpours in South Mumbai and South Central Mumbai since Wednesday morning, the India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for the city for July 22.
The weather department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds over the next 24 hours. This sustained rainfall has raised significant concerns about severe waterlogging in low lying areas.
Daily commuters and office goers have been advised to exercise extreme caution as traffic movement on major roads and local train services are likely to face disruptions.
Adding to the woes, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has issued a strict high tide warning. Civic authorities pointed out that if intense showers coincide with the high tide, seawater could breach coastal areas and severely worsen the existing waterlogging situation in the city.
The civic body has specifically instructed citizens and tourists to stay away from coastal spots. Venturing near Marine Drive, Haji Ali, Worli Sea Face, Bandra Bandstand, and other beaches could be extremely risky due to rough weather and massive sea waves.
In a formal advisory, the municipal corporation urged residents to step out of their homes only if absolutely necessary. Commuters have been requested to check live weather updates and traffic advisories before starting their journeys and to avoid heavily flooded routes.
Disaster management and relief teams have been placed on standby to tackle any emergency situations arising from the extreme weather conditions. Citizens are encouraged to rely on official helplines in case they need immediate assistance. With the weather department expecting the intensity of the rain to continue in the coming hours, Mumbai remains on high alert.
