Kargil, Ladakh: A three-storey building collapsed on a hill slope in Ladakh’s Kargil district on Saturday, injuring at least 12 people. The injured have been admitted to the hospital, and a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident.
The collapse occurred in an area where a JCB machine was operating nearby, leading to a significant pit formation due to a mudslide. Police officials confirmed that five of the injured were pulled out from under the debris, including the driver of the JCB machine. The rescue operation took nearly three hours to clear the debris and extract the driver safely.
Officials reported that most of the injured were tenants living in the building. The condition of all the injured is currently stable.
The Deputy Commissioner of Kargil, Shrikant Balasaheb Susay, assured that a thorough investigation is underway, and strict action will be taken against those found guilty. “We have taken the incident seriously and ordered a magisterial inquiry,” he stated.
In response to the incident, the Chairman of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, and Deputy Commissioner Susay have decided to form a committee to inspect structures in vulnerable areas of the district. The committee will also probe any violations of building regulation laws and identify the culprits.
Rescue operations are still ongoing, with fears that some individuals may still be buried under the debris. The administration is committed to ensuring the safety and stability of structures in the region to prevent such incidents in the future.
