Bhopal: Mohan Yadav, MLA from Ujjain South, was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh today, marking the end of days of speculation about who would succeed Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Yadav, considered close to the RSS and belonging to the OBC community, was unanimously elected leader of the BJP legislature party on Monday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah, and several Union Ministers attended the oath-taking ceremony held at the Lal Parade Ground in Bhopal. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and UP Governor Anandiben Patel were also present.
Rajendra Shukla and Jagdish Deora were sworn in as Deputy Chief Ministers, while senior BJP leader Narendra Singh Tomar will be the new Assembly Speaker.
Yadav’s appointment marks a shift from the veteran Chouhan, who was seeking a record fifth term as Chief Minister. Yadav’s affiliation with the OBC community, which forms a significant portion of the state’s population, is seen as a strategic move by the BJP.
He was first elected MLA from Ujjain South in 2013 and has retained the seat ever since. In the last month’s assembly polls, the BJP won a resounding victory with 163 seats, leaving the Congress with 66.
With Yadav at the helm, the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh enters a new chapter, focused on fulfilling the promises made to the people and addressing the challenges facing the state.
