New Delhi: In a rare show of cross-institutional solidarity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on Monday, voicing national outrage over a shocking courtroom disruption during the day.

A lawyer’s brazen attempt to hurl a shoe at the CJI during proceedings has sparked widespread condemnation, with Modi declaring, “Every Indian is angry over the attack on you this morning in the Supreme Court premises. Such despicable acts have no place in our society — they’re utterly reprehensible.”

The incident unfolded in CJI Gavai’s courtroom as the bench heard urgent mentions. Advocate Rakesh Kishor suddenly erupted, hurling insults, chanting slogans like “We won’t tolerate insults to Sanatan Dharma,” and allegedly flinging a shoe. Security swiftly intervened, dragging the agitator out amid chaos. Remarkably, CJI Gavai remained unflappable, resuming hearings with poise and assuring colleagues, “We won’t be swayed by such antics; proceedings continue without disruption.”

Modi, in his conversation with the CJI, praised Gavai’s composure as a beacon of judicial fortitude. “The patience shown by Chief Justice BR Gavai in such circumstances is commendable. It reflects his dedication to justice and the spirit of our Constitution,” the PM remarked, underscoring the episode’s affront to democratic norms.

The Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association echoed the sentiment, issuing a scathing rebuke: “We unanimously express anguish over a lawyer’s unbecoming and uncontrolled conduct that sought to dishonour the Chief Justice and fellow judges.” Post-incident, CJI Gavai consulted court officials, the Secretary General, and security heads to bolster protocols.

As probes into the lawyer’s motives unfold — amid whispers of deeper grievances — this breach tests the judiciary’s sanctity. Modi’s intervention signals a united front against anarchy, reminding all that justice demands dignity, not drama.
