New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi attacks Congress over the Waqf fine law during his Hisar visit. Questioning Congress’s sincerity towards the Muslim community, Modi told the party, “If you love Muslims so much, then choose a Muslim as party president and give tickets to Muslims across the country in 50 per cent of the elections.” He hit out at the party, saying it had not taken such steps and that neither had it ever intended to help anyone, including the Muslims.

He stated that Congress’s appeasement policy is not serving the Muslim community but is proving to be a burden on the community, asserted PM Modi. The party was taking care of very few extremists for the sake of appeasement, making common Muslims poor, uneducated, and neglected in society, he alleged.

Prime Minister Modi also cited the Waqf Law, the amendment of which is under consideration now, as a classic example of Congress’s failure. He clarified that the amended provisions in the Act are for the purpose of respecting Waqf— for the purpose that Waqf property could get the benefits and not land mafias.

The Waqf Law: A Tool for Social Justice Reform

Detailing why the amended Waqf Act will not endanger tribal lands across the country, PM Modi highlighted the major changes in the amended Waqf law. Under the new provisions, these lands will now be secure from actions that previously made them susceptible to transfer through Waqf boards. The purpose of the amendment is to ensure that the profit of Waqf properties goes to the needy Muslim families, especially women, children and widows, so that everyone gets their due share and real justice becomes possible, it had said.

Unfavourable Attitude of Congress Toward Dr Ambedkar and His Legacy

Firing salvos at Congress, PM Modi also claimed it was the same party which was trying to destroy the legacy of Baba Saheb Dr B. R. Ambedkar, the founder of the Indian Constitution. The party was accused of using command over the Constitution for political ends, particularly during a power crisis. In the context of the Emergency, Modi said Congress had “disregarded the spirit of the Constitution” for the sake of staying in power while “running roughshod over Dr Ambedkar, who was the architect of the Constitution, through the Emergency”.
