New Delhi: Set to impact millions of users, Meta has now said goodbye to some of them with the new announcement that it will be shutting down its Messenger Desktop App for Windows and Mac on December 15, 2025.

AppleInsider first reported the move, marking the end of an era for desktop workstation enthusiasts who relied on the standalone app for effortless communication.

From December 15, users trying to log in will be automatically taken to the Facebook website or messenger.com so that they can keep chatting without having to bounce back and forth between the two sites. Meta is reaching out to those users proactively and asking them to uninstall the app after the deadline, as it is going to stop working altogether over the next 60 days. The company hasn’t shared the reasoning for this, but it exemplifies Meta’s growing focus on web-friendly and consolidated platforms.

Are you concerned about your chat histories disappearing? Your encrypted smartphone chats will not automatically be stored in the archives. This operation can be done only if you have activated secure message storage available under Settings > Data and Storage Usage > Storage usage. To check: Dig into the app’s Settings > Privacy & Safety > End-to-End Encrypted Chats, and tap on Message Storage. Enable Secure Storage if it’s turned off – that’s your backup to losing all of your important user data.

Professionals and multitaskers addicted to the app’s desktop convenience will be inconvenienced by such a sunset. As Meta consolidates its ecosystem, they recommend users switch over early to prevent any hiccups.
