New Delhi: The call to hand out the harshest of punishments to Aftab Poonawala for the grisly murder of his girlfriend Shraddha Walkar is getting louder.
On Thursday, there were unprecedented and dramatic scenes outside the Saket court as lawyers shouted slogans demanding death penalty for the accused, who killed his live-in partner at their rented flat in Mehrauli before chopping her body parts into 35 pieces and disposing them in different parts of Delhi.
Aftab was produced before the local court via video conference for a custody hearing late on Thursday afternoon.
Police had feared Aftab would be attacked if he was brought in person, hence the court permitted using a video link from jail.
A large group of lawyers had already gathered outside the courtroom and shouted slogans against Aftab.
Some cried ‘hang him, hang him’, while others shouted ‘hang the jihadi’.
Debates on ‘love jihad’ — a term used by the right wing to accuse Muslim men of ‘luring’ Hindu women to convert them to Islam – have resurfaced in the wake of the Shraddha murder case.
