New Delhi: The India Alliance, a coalition of 28 opposition parties, held its fourth meeting in Delhi on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, to discuss its roadmap for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The meeting was attended by senior leaders from various parties, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav.
During the meeting, there was some tension when Yadav questioned the Congress about its stance on including Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati in the alliance. Yadav said there were reports that the Congress was still interested in forming an alliance with the BSP and asked for clarification.
Kharge responded by saying that it was not appropriate to form opinions based on media reports and that the Congress was not considering any such alliance. He emphasized that the alliance’s focus was on working with the Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal in Uttar Pradesh.
However, senior Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam stirred controversy by stating that the BJP could not be defeated without Mayawati’s inclusion in the India Alliance. He argued that Mayawati was a influential leader in Uttar Pradesh and could sway 18-22% of the votes.
The meeting concluded with the alliance agreeing on a roadmap for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, including strategies for candidate selection, campaign messaging, and resource allocation.
The India Alliance aims to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming general elections and provide a united front against the incumbent government.
