Mumbai: Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell retired from one-day cricket, the aim being to concentrate on T20 Internationals, which suits him the most as it matches his aggressive “shorten format” nature.
In an emotional Instagram post, Glenn Maxwell, 36, announced his decision, concluding a 12-year ODI career that saw him play 138 matches, score 3,896 runs at 126.7, and take 73 wickets. His last ODI match was Australia’s semi-final defeat to South Africa in the 2023 World Cup.
One of the heroes of Australia’s 2015 and 2023 success in the 50-over ODI World Cup, Maxwell said he intends to stretch his international career in T20I, where he has made 2,814 runs from 113 matches. It comes before Australia’s T20I series against Pakistan in November 2025.
The call comes after a lean recent ODI stint, with Maxwell averaging 21.6 across his past 15 games of 2023. He’s still a T20I regular after all; while in February 2025 he picked up Player of the Match in Australia’s T20I win in New Zealand.
He plans to continue playing franchise T20, including the IPL, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and in domestic cricket for Victoria and Melbourne Stars.
“I wanted to put this out there,” Maxwell said in a statement. He expressed gratitude to fans, teammates and Cricket Australia for their support.
“Glenn’s ODI career was incredible, and, as a very senior and highly respected player, we discussed the matter at length, and after he had time to consider his options, he has accepted our decision,” George Bailey, the Cricket Australia selection chair, told ESPNcricinfo. He’s still a massive part of our plans.”
Disappointment was expressed by some fans on X, believing Maxwell’s ODI cricket flourished, with support for him switching largely hinged on his power-packed T20I stats and Australia’s recent commitment to preparing a strong squad for the T20 World Cup 2026.
Maxwell’s retirement from ODIs will mark the end of an era in his Australian career, but his focus on T20Is presents an exciting new chapter as he strives to assist Australia in achieving global T20 supremacy.
