Massive Cyberattacks Strike Iran Amid Rising Tensions with Israel

Jerusalem: On Saturday, 12th October, Iran suffered a series of devastating cyberattacks that crippled several key government branches, including the judiciary, legislature, and executive sectors. In addition to government institutions, nuclear facilities were also targeted, raising concerns about the country’s vulnerability amid growing tensions with Israel.

The cyberattacks disrupted Iran’s fuel distribution systems, municipal networks, transportation systems, and ports. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei now faces concerns over Israel’s next move, fearing that their oil facilities could become the next target after Hamas and Hezbollah leaders were previously eliminated.

Is Israel’s Next Target Iran’s Oil Facilities?

Amid speculation, Israeli forces appear determined to inflict economic damage on Iran. Iran, on the other hand, is concerned that Israel might set its sights on the country’s oil wells, particularly the strategically important Kharg Island, located 25 kilometres off the Iranian coast in the Persian Gulf. Iran exports 95% of its oil from this location, producing nearly three million barrels of oil daily, making Kharg Island a significant economic asset.

Iran Prepared for Defence

Iran had earlier declared its readiness to defend itself in the event of an Israeli attack. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant recently promised that Israel’s response to any provocation would be “deadly, precise, and surprising.”

Addressing the United Nations Security Council on Thursday, Iran’s permanent representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, said the Islamic Republic is “fully prepared to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity against any attack that targets its vital interests and security.”
