“Make Me Happy”: Trump Praises Modi But Threatens Stiffer Tariffs Over Russian Oil

Washington: US President Donald Trump has renewed his warning to India, hinting at steeper tariffs if New Delhi does not curb its imports of Russian oil.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “We could raise tariffs on India if they don’t help on the Russian oil issue.” He quickly softened the tone, describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “a very good man” and “a good guy”.

“He knew I was not happy,” Trump added. “It was important to make me happy. They do trade, and we can raise tariffs on them rapidly.”

The remarks revive tensions that escalated in August 2025, when the US imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods — 25 per cent as a direct penalty for India’s Russian oil purchases.

Washington has long argued that such trade helps fund Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Trump has previously claimed Modi assured him India would halt Russian oil buys, a statement New Delhi denied. India, dependent on Russia as its primary oil supplier, maintains that market realities and consumer needs guide its energy decisions.

While trade talks between the two nations continue, analysts warn that fresh tariff hikes could strain bilateral ties. The episode underscores the delicate balance between energy security, diplomacy, and geopolitical pressures in today’s world.
