New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been granted bail by the Supreme Court in the ongoing liquor policy case. The decision, made by a bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, saw both judges agreeing on bail but expressing differing views on the validity of Kejriwal’s arrest. Justice Surya Kant upheld the arrest’s validity, whereas Justice Bhuyan questioned the timing.
Kejriwal was granted bail on a bond of ₹10 lakh in the case being pursued by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). While the Supreme Court allowed the bail, it did not declare the CBI’s arrest of Kejriwal as unlawful. This comes after Kejriwal had already secured bail from the Supreme Court in a related Enforcement Directorate (ED) case on 12 July.
The Aam Aadmi Party leader was initially taken into custody by the CBI on 26 June from Tihar Jail following his interim bail in the ED case. The Supreme Court had earlier reserved its order on Kejriwal’s bail plea on 5 September after hearing arguments from both sides.
The contrasting opinions of the judges have added another layer of complexity to the legal proceedings, but Kejriwal’s bail provides some respite amid the ongoing investigations. The case remains under scrutiny, with the Supreme Court’s recent decisions setting the stage for further legal developments.
