Washington: A late-night shooting incident near the White House sent security agencies into high alert in the US capital, though fortunately no one was injured in the episode.
The firing took place in the early hours of Sunday morning close to Lafayette Park, right in front of the presidential residence. Police swiftly cordoned off several blocks in the area as a precautionary measure.
The suspect, who opened fire, managed to flee the scene and remains at large. Authorities are actively searching for both the individual and a vehicle believed to be involved.
The Secret Service confirmed that its team, in coordination with the Metropolitan Police Department and the US Park Police, has launched a joint manhunt. No motive has been established so far, and the identity of the shooter has not been disclosed.
White House operations continued normally, but security was further tightened in and around the premises. Lafayette Park has been under repair for the past few weeks with barricades already in place, adding to the restricted access in the vicinity.
At the time of the incident, President Donald Trump was present at the White House. Later on Sunday, his motorcade moved around the Memorial Circle, where he is reportedly planning to build the Independence Arch. He also visited his Trump National Golf Club in Virginia before returning for a private Easter dinner with family.
This episode comes against the backdrop of heightened security concerns surrounding the President. It adds to a series of recent alerts, including a suspicious aircraft incident last week at Palm Beach International Airport in Florida.
While the shooting caused temporary disruption in the area, officials have assured that the situation remains under control with no harm to life or property.
