Lucknow: Four months after being arrested in connection with the Lakhimpur Kheri violence in UP, Union minister Ajay Mishra Teni’s son Ashish Mishra was granted bail by the Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench on Thursday.
Additional advocate general Vinod Kumar Shahi said that a single-judge bench of Justice Rajeev Singh had granted bail to Mishra. He is the first of 13 persons arrested in the case to get bail.
A car belonging to Ashish Mishra allegedly ran over four farmers who were agitating against three controversial farm laws – which were subsequently repealed by the Centre — in UP’s Lakhimpur Kheri district on October 3. In the protests that followed, four more people were killed, including a local journalist.

Mishra was arrested six days later, following the Supreme Court’s observation that he seemed to be receiving lenient treatment from the police.
In November, the apex court appointed retired Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Rakesh Kumar Jain to monitor the investigation to “ensure transparency, fairness and absolute impartiality in the outcome of the investigation”.
