New Delhi: After reaching an exceptional 97% literacy rate, Mizoram is now the first state in India to be declared 100% literate. The declaration under the ULLAS New India Literacy Program is a big step for the northeastern state. It has now surpassed Kerala in literacy rates. Aizawl hosted a ceremony where Union Minister of State Jayant Chaudhary recognised the province’s achievement. He awarded Mizoram’s Chief Minister, Lalduhoma, with a certificate of achievement.
An Excellent Advancement in Education
Mizoram has achieved full literacy because of its strong education commitment. As a result of the state’s actions, no one living in the country aged 15 or older can read or write. The impressive growth was made possible by the ULLAS-New India Literacy Programme, launched by the central government to improve many lives. The Ministry of Education considers a 97% literacy rate full literacy; Mizoram has achieved more, at 98.20%.
The Journey to Learning to Read
Mizoram performs well, due in large part to a solid educational foundation. It was found in the 2011 Census that the literacy rate in that state was 91.33%, making it third in the nation. In 2023, the ULLAS survey detected and identified 3,026 illiterate people in the state. In addition, 1,692 people participated in regular literacy classes, which contributed significantly to improving the state’s literacy rate. In this campaign, 292 people joined forces, including students, teachers, experts and cluster resource coordinators, who devoted a lot of their time to sharing information and lessons with their communities. Joining their forces has led Mizoram to become a literacy leader across India.
Outcomes of the ULLAS Programme
Introduced by the Ministry of Education in July 2023, the ULLAS-New India Literacy Programme set new standards and urged states to boost their actions. This initiative has been very successful, advancing from the 2011 Census that showed 79.04% literacy rate in the country. Ladakh achieved full literacy in 2024, while Mizoram follows. Mizoram’s new achievement has upgraded its status and motivated other states to give more importance to education.
A Country Pattern
Mizoram’s incredible progress comes through the diligent work of the community and smart planning. This shows that having specific education efforts and completing them together with the community can lead to big dreams. With Mizoram achieving nearly 100% literacy, India can see that its major goals are attainable when everyone joins forces and is dedicated. The success of this effort will most likely stir change in other states and make a positive difference to the country’s education.
