New Delhi: Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal has expressed his views regarding the opposition alliance ‘India’, claiming that the group must project itself as ‘united’ and not fragmented, as it seems at present. He underlined the fact that the constituent parties of the alliance require a common policy, ideological plank, and a certain agenda for the future.
Sibal proposed a formal framework for the opposition coalition, claiming that in the absence of a sound policy, ideology, and well-defined roadmap, the coalition could not possibly decide on its political direction effectively. He also said that the coalition requires appointed representatives to properly project its ideas to the public.
Sibal pointed out that the latest state assembly elections showed contrasts among the constituent parties of the alliance. In his view, the resolution of such contrasts and cohesion within the alliance is important in order to exert a meaningful influence in subsequent elections. He emphasised the importance of the consistency of ideas at the national level for the alliance, citing that in the absence of a clear structure, the alliance could not maximise its strength.
Sibal also discussed the potential introduction of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill during the current budget session. He said it would be an intriguing thing to observe how allies of the NDA coalition are going to act on this front, given the fact that BJP does not possess a majority. Sibal conjectured that the BJP might naturally take an interest in this matter, considering the impending Bihar elections.
Also, Sibal was concerned regarding the matter of delimitation, which has political implications for the nation. He indicated that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had called a meeting with the leaders of various parties to resolve the issue. Sibal is of the view that opposition parties will face a challenge in dealing with this problem, and the entire operation must be dealt with in a concerted manner.
