Justice Khanna Takes The Helm: India’s New Chief Justice Takes Oath

New Delhi: President Murmu has administered the oath of office to Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the new Chief Justice of India. The inauguration was today at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 10 am. Justice Khanna has been sworn in as the Chief Justice of India today succeeding Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and he will serve till 13 May 2025. Justice Khanna has been a witness to many significant judgements such as the one on Electoral Bond Scheme and the ruling on Article 370.

Justice Khanna joined the Supreme Court as a judge in 2019. He has been part of core issues like striking down of Article 370, maintaining credibility of EVMs and extending interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Justice Khanna was born on 14 May 1960 in Delhi to parents both of whom were lawyers. His father, Dev Raj Khanna, had been a judge in the Delhi High Court and his uncle is H.R. Khanna, a former Supreme Court Judge. Justice Khanna did his law from Delhi University Campus Law Centre and has also worked as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

Justice Khanna joined practising in 1983 after receiving his Enrolment with the Delhi Bar Council. He began his practise at the district courts in the Tis Hazari complex and then shifted to the Delhi High court for practising. He also was the Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department for several years. In 2004 he was appointed as Permanent Counsel (Civil) for Delhi and then he dealt with number of criminal matters as Additional Public Prosecutor in Delhi High Court.

On 16 October, Chief Justice of India designate D.Y. Chandrachud recommended Justice Sanjiv Khanna for the post of Chief Justice of India. After this, the central government formally appointed Justice Khanna on 24 October. He stepped down from the position of Chief Justice of India on Friday and got a warm farewell from the judges, lawyers and the staff as he signs off from his two-year term.
