A Struggle Born on the Border
Born in a village that frequently witnessed cross-border firing, Jugraj’s early life was marked by hardship. His family struggled financially, and in an effort to support them, Jugraj sold water bottles along the border. His father worked as a porter, and the family lived under the constant threat of conflict.
Despite these challenges, Jugraj found solace in hockey. Inspired by local players Shamsher Singh and Chatara Singh, Jugraj joined the Jalandhar Hockey Academy, where his talents quickly became apparent. In 2011, he was selected to play for the Punjab National Bank (PNB) team, earning a modest stipend of Rs 3,500.
The Turning Point
Jugraj’s big break came in 2016 when he was inducted into the Indian Navy team, receiving the position of Team Patti Officer. His income increased tenfold, providing much-needed relief to his family. The Indian Navy job was life-changing for Jugraj, but it was his passion and dedication to hockey that set him on the path to greatness.
In 2021, Jugraj was part of the Indian squad that won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Now, he has further solidified his place in the hearts of Indian fans by leading the country to victory in the Asian Champions Trophy.
