Islamabad: Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has sparked widespread mockery and heavy criticism following a public address filled with glaring historical and geographical blunders. During a recent speech, the leader suffered a massive slip of the tongue by confusing the Afghanistan border with the Indian frontier, while also making controversial remarks about the Hindu minority living in Pakistan.
The most shocking moment of the address came when Zardari recalled the Kashmir conflict. He claimed that his father participated in the war against the Indian Army after being summoned by Muhammad Ali Jinnah for a supposed Kashmir jihad. Boasting about the military outcome, Zardari proudly stated that by the grace of God, Pakistan secured the Durand Line as its boundary. He completely forgot that the Durand Line is the recognized international border separating Pakistan and Afghanistan. The boundary with India is historically known as the Radcliffe Line, while the militarized border in Kashmir is the Line of Control.
Beyond his geographical errors, Zardari drew severe backlash for his tone deaf comments on minority rights. Attempting to counter the ideological concept of an undivided India, he claimed that Muslims are highly tolerant people. He stated that the Hindu population in Pakistan currently stands at 3 to 4 percent and asserted that they are completely free, happy, and prefer living under Pakistani rule rather than with India.
Historical records and official data sharply contradict the demographic claims made by the President. At the time of partition, the Hindu population in the region was around 21 percent. Today, that number has drastically dwindled to less than 1.4 percent due to decades of systemic persecution and forced migrations.
His insensitive choice of words immediately triggered outrage across the border. Prominent Indian lyricist and scriptwriter Javed Akhtar took to social media to heavily slam the Pakistani President. Reacting to the speech, Akhtar criticized Zardari for arrogantly using the word tolerate when referring to minority citizens. He pointed out the extreme insensitivity of the Pakistani leadership towards marginalized communities. The viral speech has now left Pakistani citizens highly embarrassed on global platforms, with many questioning the basic general knowledge of their head of state.
