New Delhi: Amid escalating US-Iran tensions, the JASSM-ER (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile – Extended Range) has emerged as one of America’s most formidable weapons in the ongoing conflict.

This advanced cruise missile enables the US military to strike high-value, heavily defended targets deep inside enemy territory while keeping aircraft and pilots far beyond the reach of hostile air defences.

Developed by Lockheed Martin, the JASSM-ER is a stealthy, air-launched precision weapon that has been in service since 2014. Its standout feature is the impressive range of over 930 km (more than 500 nautical miles), allowing fighter jets and bombers to launch attacks from safe standoff distances. Equipped with a powerful 1,000-pound (approximately 450 kg) penetrating warhead, it can destroy fortified bunkers, command centres, and critical infrastructure with high accuracy.

What makes the JASSM-ER truly special is its advanced stealth technology. Its low-observable design and terrain-following flight path make it extremely difficult for enemy radars to detect, giving it a significant edge in contested environments. The missile is compatible with multiple platforms, including F-15E Strike Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, B-1B Lancer, B-2 Spirit, and B-52 Stratofortress bombers, offering remarkable operational flexibility.

Reports suggest the United States has already deployed over 1,000 JASSM-ER missiles in the first four weeks of the conflict with Iran and is committing nearly 82 per cent of its total stockpile to this theatre, leaving limited reserves for other global contingencies. Each missile comes at a substantial cost of around $1.5 million (roughly ₹12-13 crore), underscoring its status as a premium precision asset.

Military analysts view the JASSM-ER as a game-changer in modern standoff warfare. Its combination of extended range, stealth, and lethal accuracy allows the US to maintain pressure on Iranian targets without risking pilots in high-threat zones. As the conflict intensifies, this missile is likely to play a central role in shaping the battlefield dynamics.
