Chennai: Ahead of the much-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise has initiated a massive overhaul of its backroom staff. On Monday, the five-time IPL champions officially announced their decision to part ways with five key members of their coaching and support team, including veteran batting coach Michael Hussey.

The latest departures follow the franchise’s earlier decision to end its long-standing association with head coach Stephen Fleming post the 2026 season. Former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan has already been appointed to fill the head coach position.

Taking to social media platform X, the CSK management posted emotional farewell messages for the departing stalwarts. Expressing gratitude to Michael Hussey, the franchise wrote, “From the very first season in 2008, you have been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings family. Your journey in Yellow has been defined not just by the runs you scored and the players you mentored, but by the dedication, humility, and unwavering commitment you brought to this franchise over the years.” The statement concluded with the iconic phrase, “Once a Super King, always a Super King.”

Alongside Hussey, bowling coach Eric Simons, who has been instrumental in shaping CSK’s bowling attack since 2018, was also released. The franchise thanked Simons for his dedicated service and contributions to the team’s success. It has been confirmed that Indian pacer Mohit Sharma will step in to take over the bowling coach duties for the upcoming season.

The restructuring also saw the exit of assistant coach Rajiv Kumar. The franchise acknowledged his significant contributions to the team’s preparation, development, and performances over the years, praising his dedication to working closely with the players.

Additionally, two long-serving members of the fitness and medical team—physio Tommy Simsek and strength and conditioning coach Greg King—were bid farewell. Simsek, who had been a constant presence behind the scenes since the inaugural 2008 season, was specially thanked for keeping the players match-ready, including managing the fitness of the team’s famous “Dad’s Army” era. Greg King was appreciated for his expertise in helping the players overcome physical challenges and consistently perform at the highest level across multiple seasons.

The sweeping changes indicate a fresh strategic direction for the Chennai-based franchise under Zaheer Khan as they prepare to build a renewed squad for IPL 2027.
