Instagram is gearing up to introduce a new feature called “Stories,” a move that closely mirrors a popular tool already available on Snapchat. This upcoming feature will allow users to share photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours, offering a fresh way to engage with their audience in a temporary, time-sensitive format.
The concept behind Instagram’s Stories is strikingly similar to Snapchat’s “Stories,” where users can capture and share moments with friends and followers for a limited time before the content vanishes automatically. This addition is seen as a strategic effort by Instagram to compete directly with Snapchat, which has built a strong user base around its disappearing content.
In addition to the new Stories feature, Instagram’s Direct Messages will include a “Vanish Mode,” a function where messages disappear after they are read, similar to Snapchat’s disappearing message feature. This mode will enhance user privacy, allowing for more transient and private conversations.
Moreover, Instagram has been testing a feature called “Secret Posts” for a select group of users. This tool enables users to post content temporarily, with posts automatically hidden or removed from their profiles after a set period.
Instagram’s parent company, Meta, is currently testing these features in the beta version of the app. Once testing is complete, the company plans to roll out the update via an over-the-air (OTA) update for both Android and iOS devices, bringing these new capabilities to Instagram’s global user base.
