New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on an important diplomatic tour this week visiting Caribbean, Africa and South America in his foreign tours. The tour which encompasses Guyana, Nigeria, and Brazil is considered very important in India’s foreign policy because India has been involving in attempting to improve relations with African and Caribbeans in the recent past. It shall be conducted from the 16th of November through to the 21st of November in the year 2012.
The tour will start with Nigerian stop for Indian diplomacy which is very important for Prime Minister Modi. Largest economy and most populous country in Africa, Nigeria is vital partner for India because Nigeria is OPEC member and vital for India as oil importer. During the PM Modi’s visit in Nigeria he will engage in bilateral meetings where he will meet President Bola Tinubu to enhance strategic and bilateral relations as well as economic cooperation between the two countries .
India uses its membership in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as a reason to be an important partner for Nigeria. Next to Nigeria, the Prime Minister Modi will visit Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to participate G20 Summit from 17-19 November. Last year, India had the G20 presidency which PM Modi passed over to Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Laying much focus on global technology regulation and funds for environment friendly use of energy, PM Modi during the summit is expected to issue the New Delhi Declaration. He also is expected to have several bilateral meeting with world leaders some of which are Chinese President Xi Jinping and the President of the United States Joe Biden.
In the last stage of his tour, prime minister Modi is to visit Guyana for 19-21 November. While in Guyana Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have an audience with the President of Guyana Irfaan Ali. India has strengthend its relations with Guyana especially in the field of defence,energy and agriculture. Also, the Prime Minister will lead India-CARICOM Summit, which will mainly discuss ways to improve bilateral buyer-seller cooperation in trade and investment, and especially infrastructure developments.
India has the distinction of having close to 40 per cent of the Guyanese population of Indian origin and are called Indo-Guyanese. The majority of the employees surveyed are from Uttar Pradesh Bihar and Jharkhand in the India state. President Ali itself is an Indian origin and last year, he was honoured to be a chief guest at Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Non-Resident Indian Day.
