New Delhi: India has seen 203 new COVID-19 infections and four deaths, bringing the active caseload to 3,961, led by Omicron subvariants LF.7 and NB.1.8.
The number of India’s active COVID-19 cases rose to 3,961 as 203 fresh cases emerged in the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s 8 a.m. update. The total number of deaths since January 2025 had risen to 32, one each in Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Kerala.
Kerala has the highest number of active cases (1,435) in the country, followed by Maharashtra (506), Delhi (483), Gujarat (338) and West Bengal (331). Delhi reported the highest single-day spike with 47 new cases. The increase is associated with highly contagious subvariants; cases jumped from 257 on May 22 to 3,961 by June 2.
The Health Ministry had reported 363 new cases as recently as June 1, signifying a significant surge. Authorities have ramped up testing and tracing contacts, especially in densely populated urban centres like Delhi and Mumbai.
Union Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav gave an assurance, “The Centre is fully prepared to deal with any eventuality of the COVID-19.”
Veena George, the health minister of Kerala, called for people to wear masks in crowded areas because unvaccinated people with underlying conditions are most at risk. LF is included in the World Health Organisation’s 7 and NB. 1. 8 as Variants Under Tracking, indicating the potential for increased spread but not known to be Variants of Concern.
As India fights a 14-fold surge in cases in just 10 days, health officials stress the need for hygiene and vaccination to slow the spread, with increased precautions necessary to prevent a wider outbreak.
