Wayanad: The Indian Navy continues to spearhead rescue and relief operations in the landslide-affected areas of Wayanad district, despite facing inclement weather and challenging terrain. Reinforcements, including additional personnel, resources, and essential supplies, have been mobilized from INS Zamorin to bolster the relief efforts and support the local community impacted by the disaster.
Currently, 78 Naval personnel are actively involved in the ongoing rescue operations. These teams have been deployed across multiple locations, including Chooralmala and Mundakkai, working in tandem with disaster relief forces and local administration. One team is stationed at a river base to maintain a continuous supply of materials, food, and provisions to the affected people, while other teams are engaged in searching for survivors, clearing debris, and recovering bodies. Additionally, a medical post has been established at Chooralmala to provide assistance to the injured.
A significant effort was made by a team comprising three officers and 30 sailors to support the Indian Army in assembling and constructing a crucial Bailey Bridge over the river. This bridge, which connects the isolated regions of Chooralmala and Mundakkai, was completed on August 1, 2024, and is vital for enabling the movement of heavy machinery and ambulances, thus serving as the logistical backbone for the relief operations.
On August 2, 2024, an Indian Navy Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) from INS Garuda, operating out of Calicut, conducted an aerial reconnaissance of the affected areas to search for survivors and locate bodies. The helicopter also airlifted 12 state police personnel along with rescue equipment to the disaster site, which remained inaccessible by road. The sortie was conducted over hilly terrain under low visibility and challenging weather conditions.
The Indian Navy is working closely with the local administration to ensure the swift evacuation of stranded individuals and the provision of basic amenities and medical aid. Their coordinated efforts aim to alleviate the suffering of those impacted by the landslides and restore normalcy to the region.
